30/30 January Challenge #20

For today's painting I am using another of the quilled paper birds that I made before Christmas. The quilled birds are all made with 1/4 inch strips of my own painted papers using patterns of my own drawings.
#995 - Rufous Hummingbird - 5 x 7 mixed media
I think this would have worked better if the flowers had been blue as it would make a nicer contrast to the rust coloured bird. Oh, well, what is done is done!

I think this will be the last of the quilled pieces, at least, for the challenge: they just are not ringing any bells for me. I don't know why I am not liking any of them because I was happy with the quilled pieces but once I added them to the paintings, I was disappointed.

Today is the 20th day of the challenge so we only have 10 more paintings to do. Check out the work of the other artists on Leslie's 30/30 page and stay tuned for my next painting!

  2. Oh, how I wish I could see the quilling up closer! This is really very nice. I agree with Sheila...sometimes you need to step away from your work for a while and see them with fresh eyes when you come back.

  4. First off love the red flowers, cause they really love red too. Do you have hummers in your garden? We only get Ruby Throats, the little bombers!! You might just be off the quill for now, we keep changing what we like. But I think they look really neat and as Joan says, in person I bet it kicks it up a notch. That 3D look. At this point everything looks off.

    1. Hi Nelvia, yes we have Calliope, Rufous and Black Chinned hummers, although for the last few years the Black Chinned have been chasing the others away - they are such a treat to watch. I think you are right about just being off the quilling for now as I am really into my watercolours- time will tell. Thanks for stopping by.
