30/30 January Challenge #14

Back in December when I was getting ready for this challenge I made a few quilled paper birds intending to have birds as my theme. As you have seen my theme changed, or at least expanded, to include other subjects, but the birds are not forgotten. I have already blogged about one of those birds and here is another.
#991 - Chestnut-backed Chickadee - 5 x 7 quilled paper and watercolour
I find quilled art very hard to photograph: if you aim straight at the picture the quilling doesn't show well, so I take photos from the side which makes the view angled but at least the quilling looks good. I used another mat from that batch I got from the framing business and was able to match the green in my tree almost perfectly.

I feel like a slow poke with these paintings because many of the other artists in
Leslie's 30/30 Challenge have already posted their pieces before I even finish painting mine - lol.

Thanks for stopping by: I enjoy reading your comments.

  1. No slow poke Val. Your work is detailed, so it should take time :) I love all the texture in the tree. Just beautiful work there. And the bird is wonderful, love the wings :)

  2. Val, this is so nice and matted so well! I understand what you mean about taking photos of the quilling. It is something you really need to see from the side. It adds a lot to the piece! I try to start the challenge the day before it starts so I have something to post the first day without stressing myself out. Once the first one is done the second one doesn't seem like such pressure, and it I don't get it finished until 11 pm (which happens quite a lot) I don't have to worry. If I can I will even try to get two ahead in case there is a day I just can't get one done.

    1. Thanks for your comment Joan and for the encouragement. I try to start painting before the due date but often find life gets in the way. As for painting until 11 pm, that never happens here as evenings are our family time. I keep reminding myself that this is not a competition and I won't get marked down if I miss a day but it doesn't help - lol. Thanks again!

  3. I agree with Sheila- your work shouldn't be rushed. Anyways, this challenge is for US. To learn, to grow, to enjoy camaraderie of other artists. This little bird is priceless! Just keep enjoying the process!

  4. Thanks Laurie. Glad you like my bird. I debated doing the challenge this year (I have too much art as it is) but I do enjoy the process, the fellowship and finding new artists to follow when I check out the other postings. The whole thing is a great experience!
